ICDC provides intensive,
individualized services, following the principles of applied behavior analysis
(ABA). While there are many interventions and theories about how best to treat
autism, only ABA has been supported by sound scientific research. The core of
ABA is an intensive educational experience, in which the functions of behaviors
are examined and specific methods are chosen to address the functions of
behaviors. Basic skills are taught utilizing positive reinforcement procedures,
which includes providing an experience rich with affection and praise. Skills
that are taught in the classroom are generalized to the natural environment, so
that children can function independently and maximize their potential.
Family
involvement is essential to the success of these programs. Family members are
taught how to implement the specialized teaching methods, as well as how to
cope with their children's challenging behaviors.
